Gender Equity in Landscape Architecture Project
The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) is taking a leadership role to ensure the landscape architecture profession is as inclusive, progressive and modern as it can possibly can be.
Most of what is thought or known about gender issues within the profession are anecdotal. To properly understand the issue, AILA has announced the launch of a Gender Equity Study to investigate the participation of women in landscape architecture and develop strategies to address gender inequity in the profession.

The research and action project undertaken in collaboration with the research-based advocacy organisation Parlour: women, equity, architecture, and the XYX Lab at Monash University is developing the understanding of how we perform broadly as a profession and what might need to happen to improve. It will assist those workplaces that already have gender equity practices and principles in place to continue to improve and provide an important base for others to get started.
Next Steps for Gender Equity in Landscape Architecture
AILA has released a report which outlines how it will respond the gender inequities in the profession.
Titled Gender Equity: Next Steps, the report is built on the work delivered to AILA by Parlour, the research-based advocacy organisation working to improve gender equity in the built environment professions, and includes an action plan that was formed by AILA’s Gender Equity Working Group.

Gender Equity Working Group
The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) has announced the forming of a Gender Equity Working Group who will provide advice to the AILA Board on the professions response to the Census Report: Women in Landscape Architecture.
Overwhelmingly, twenty expressions of interest were received from members to join the Working Group.
“The formation of the Working Group is the next critical step in AILA’s ongoing Gender Equity Program,”said AILA Chief Executive, Tim Arnold.
“We’ve spent the first part of the year sharing and promoting the results of the Census Report and our attention will now move to exploring the recommendations provided by Parlour and developing the actions in response.”
“We can’t express our gratitude enough to all of the members who nominated to be on the Working Group.”
Results and progress of the Working Group will be provided to members a regular intervals throughout the year.

Gender Equity Policy
AILA’s Draft Gender Equity Policy was developed by AILA’s Gender Equity Working Group in 2019, released to members for comment in early 2020 and finalised and endorsed by the National Board in September. The Policy Launch celebrates the release of this pivotal document which establishes AILA’s position and provides a formal framework for all interactions with the Institute and its members in relation to gender equity.
