QLD Brickworks Landscape International Speaker Series

QLD Brickworks Landscape International Speaker Series
AILA and Brickworks invite you to their Landscape International Speaker Series featuring renowned landscape architect, Dirk Sijmons.

Title: Architectura + Natura = Landscape

Landscape as a mirror of society and as a living co-production between nature and humans has been a lifelong fascination. Which societal processes ranging from food production to urbanization can be enticed to act as positive formative forces in the landscape? What natural processes, ranging from erosion and sedimentation to succession, can be turned into nature-based solutions for human needs? How can urbanization be pacified with nature? And how might these processes be conquered by landscape architecture to give them a meaningful spatial expression? A wide range of – mainly large scale - H+N+S projects are touched upon in the lectures; from sound reduction around airports to water safety, and from urban landscapes to urban metabolism, from energy transition to agricultural development, all in dialogue with both land ecosystems and marine ecosystems.

Dirk studied at Delft University of Technology. He worked at the Nature Conservation unit of the Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Social work from 1977 until 1981. From 1981 until 1984 he was head of the strategic policy development and research coordination unit of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries. From 1984 until 1990 he was head of the Landscape Architecture Department of the Dutch Forestry Commission. From 1990 until 1993 he was coordinator of the Landscape Architecture study programme of the Academy of Architecture in Amsterdam. In 1990 he was one of the three founders of H+N+S Landscape Architects. At H+N+S he is mainly responsible for regional plans.

H+N+S Landscape Architects received the National Prince Bernard Culture award in 2001. In 2002 Dirk Sijmons received the Rotterdam Maaskant award. On this occasion his book Landkaartmos was published. Other books by Sijmons are ‘ Oorden van Onthouding’ (1998, about nature and design), ‘Landschap’ (1998, which was published in English as ‘Landscape’ in 2002). In 2006 his book ‘Een plan dat werkt’ (A plan that works, about the relationship between policy making and design) was published. His book ‘Greetings form Europe’ (2008) addresses the interaction between tourism and European landscapes. From 1994 until 2011 he chaired the board of OASE, which publishes the homonymous Dutch-Flemish journal in the field of architectural theory. After intensive design research his book ‘ Landschap en energie (kWh/m2)’ (Landscape and energy) was published which discusses the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

In 2004 Dirk Sijmons was appointed Dutch Government Advisor on Landscape. He received the prestigious Edgar Doncker award in 2007 for his contribution to Dutch culture. From 2008 until 2015 Sijmons was professor of Environmental Design at Delft University of Technology.
