Brinlee Pickering - Graduate Landscape Architect

1.Where are you at in your career? (no. of years’ experience)
I began working at OCULUS in my third year of University and have continued on full time since completing my degree; totaling 1.5 years as a casual student and 10 months as a graduate landscape architect.

2.What motivated you to pursue a career in landscape architecture?
I was working in landscaping and bush regeneration for three years and decided to pursue a design career that engages with my passion for plants and ecology.

3.What do you do in a standard day ‘in the office’?
Each week isdifferent! I'm currently working on four projects across different stages. In a standard day I could be either rendering an illustrative plan in photoshop, compilinga development application report, visiting site or attending a design meeting with my colleagues. As a graduate, I'm continuously building my skills in construction documentation under the guidance of my associates.I also water the officeplants each week!

4.Tell us about a favorite project or work related experience
Attending the Festival of Landscape Architecture in 2015 was an inspirational experience. Listening to the various speakers was motivating particularly when the topic resonated with my interest in landscape ecology.

5.What advice would you give someone considering a career in landscape architecture?
The initial years of study are vigorous and draining however working in this industry is immensely rewarding with many different avenues to progress with your career, so hang in there!Get involved with AILA Fresh - our student/graduate social group. Fresh is a great support network who facilitate events and opportunitiesto meet and mix with industry professionals.
