People’s Choice Awards: The beaches, baths and bike trails transforming NSW

For the fourth year in a row, Sydneysiders are being asked to vote on which ugly duckling public spaces have been quietly transformed into swans.The inaugural Premier’s People’s Choice Awards for landscape architecture will be decided on by a vote by Domain and Sydney Morning Herald readers and revealed on Friday September 11 and the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building at the UTS Business School. Landscape architects promote healthier ageing population through seniors-focused exercise parks

The Australian Institute of Landscape Architects have released an official view that seniors-focused exercise parks could be an answer to a healthier ageing population.The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), in a recent report, revealed that the most common causes of injury in 2012-13 were falls, with over half the cases belonging to the 65-plus age group. CBD, Rygate and Caves is the makeover any sooner?

Wellington Council has engaged Moir Landscape Architecture and Northrop Consulting Engineers to undertake a review of the costings for the CBD beautification. The cost of engaging the consultants is $22,700 (excluding GST). A report to council says that 'all going according to plan' means that a fully-costed scope of works on the three options will be able to be presented to council at its Ordinary Meeting in September. Seniors-Focused Exercise Parks Could Be The Answer To Healthier Ageing

The National President of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA), Mark Frisby, identified the importance of landscape architects driving change for a healthier ageing population. “Landscape architects create a better future for society. It’s essential we combine the strengths of our profession with allied organisations, such as Lappset Australia and Victoria University, at the outset of everything we do,” Mr Frisby said. Read more.

Melbourne’s University Square park to reclaim roads

A proposed makeover of an inner-Melbourne park will see adjacent roads either entirely swallowed up or significantly reduced in size to make way for a 40 percent increase in the size of the green space.A draft concept plan for University Square in Carlton released by the City of Melbourne depicts a lush green canopy taking over all of Barry Street and most of Leicester Street, as well as a reimagining of the current park on the site. Rework begins: Old Green Square hospital becomes Child Care Centre

Work has begun on the Green Square Child Care Centre designed by Sydney architecture practice Fox Johnston in collaboration with CHROFI, Peter Stutchbury Architects, and landscape architect Craig Burton. The centre of Elphinstone is set for a makeover thanks to a dedicated band of locals. While residents are keenly aware of the vibrant, beating heart of the community, the town often gets bypassed by visitors. Designed by landscape architect Karoline Klein, outlined new pavement for walkways, sculptural art on the streets and trees for shade, as well as creating a town square in front of the Elphinstone Hotel. Australia-born Weller, who is currently Chair of Landscape Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania was, in partnership with Vlad Sitta, a designer of the controversial Garden of Australian Dreams at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra. The NSW government has approved the lease for a new zoo in western Sydney. The 16.5-hectare zoo, the first in 100 year since Taronga Zoo opened, is master planned by Aspect Studios with buildings by Misho+Associates and will be located at the 216-hectare “super park” at Bungarribee, master planned by JMD Design. Landscape architect Elizabeth Callaghan, of Hortus Design, believes that a few simple tricks can hugely increase a property’s appeal. “The garden is the buyer's first view of the house.
