More than 50 organisations across the built environment sector have come together to create the Living Cities Alliance – a new platform established by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects to advance green infrastructure. The alliance plans to develop a national green infrastructure policy. But if you think this is just about trees, think again. From Rosehill Farm’s gate, a kilometre-long avenue lined with white-trunked Blue Mountains ash eucalyptus leads to the circular forecourt of the handsome homestead, painted dove-grey, with inky blue shutters that contrast with the New England red utility buildings. Students design their own playground with tunnels, teepees and tomato patches

Consulting architect Julie Lee from landscape architect group TRACT said the students wanted to humanise the bleak space. “There were some ideas for tree houses and elevated spaces, which may have been too dangerous,” Ms Lee said. “But we can still create a lot of space where they will be able to use their imagination.” Ms Lee said it was also a great opportunity to provide an active space for inner west children living in high density housing.
