Experimental garden opens its gate

Kate Herd's rambling riverside garden in Alphington is open this weekend (March 17 and 18). Herd, an artist, garden designer and writer, has been fashioning this 2.4-hectare spread for more than 20 years and it has everything from terraced ornamental beds and a kitchen garden to naturalistic wetlands and sweeping expanses of indigenous grasses. Herd has described the garden as a "laboratory for experimentation" where she watches how particular plants cope with different growing conditions and maintenance techniques.
