The new AILA awards program was adopted last week during the National Council teleconference. Thank you to all members who provided input to the development of the new awards program in particular the members of the Awards Review Taskforce. There are many ways an awards program can be structured. The new categories have been introduced to present the fantastic work of landscape architects in a way which is more easily understood by the public and media. It is also anticipated that it may encourage workplaces to enter projects which may not have previously been winners yet make up a large part of landscape architecture practice. New, clearer awards criteria has been developed and entry processes have been simplified. With spring in the air it is a great time to be taking photos of recently completed projects and I would encourage all members to start thinking about projects to enter as the new awards programs will be starting quite soon. Chapter awards will be taking place at the start of the year so that national awards can be held each year as part of the Festival of Landscape Architecture.

Speaking of the Festival it is less than 2 months away – where has the year gone. The created directors have done a terrific job with the program including the development of supporting events, many of which are free. Take a look at the website and grab you tickets or sign up for free events.

Another item discussed at last weeks’ teleconference was a terrific initiative by the NSW heritage group. The group has shown real initiative and been successful in winning a government grant to focus on heritage landscapes. I would encourage all members to be on the watch for grants and programs that AILA could apply for or partner with other industry groups. They can help raise the profile of the profession as well as being effective advocacy tools. If you spot something get in touch with the national office and they can help pull a submission together.
