Broadbeach Entry Statement

Project Name: Broadbeach Entry Statement

Practice Name: City of Gold Coast

    Project Address: Victoria Park, Broadbeach

Demonstrate that a professional lighting design was undertaken for this project?

The double sided sign contains 1,200 red, green, blue and white LED lights and includes1.5 kilometres of wire to power thesign. The LEDs have been programed to fire at 2000 times per second so there is no visible LED flashing when photographing or videoing.

A project recommended from the Broadbeach Core Business Precinct Master Plan, the Broadbeach sculptural feature piece is located in Victoria Park to reinforce the arrival point of the precinct. Centrally located in the precinct and being double sided, it is visible to the west along the Light Rail Corridor, vehicles entering the precinct from the Gold Coast Highway (north and southbound) and T.E. Peters Drive (from the west), as well as visible from the east to the pedestrians and park users within the precinct.

The design had to be bold, double sided, enhance the sense of arrival into Broadbeach and compliment the event, dining and characteristics of the precinct. The intent of the piece is to also activate the corner of the park and provide photo opportunities for locals and visitors.

The RGBW LED’s allows the sign to be illuminated in an unlimited range of colours and at night this allows the piece is able to be calibrated to a limitless number of themes and cycle through a number of set colour combinations and sequences.

The sign was connected to the same lighting control system as the Surf Parade lighting components (Catenary and Street Lights). This gave both lighting elements one control point and runs off the same PE cell and control tablet providing consistency within the precinct.

Extensive effort went into locating the sign for maximum exposure. The entry statement had to be set back far enough from the edge of the road to leave the corner open for pedestrians and still have an impact on people driving past and people utilising the Light Rail. The angle was also carefully considered to be visible from all directions.

Since the installation of the entry statement, the previously non-activated corner of the park is now activated and is a destination point for visitors to take photos and upload to various social media platforms.

What was the main design objective for the lighting scheme?

The intent of the sign was to create a bold visual statement that would complement the existing character of Broadbeach and enhance the visitor experience by adding to the atmosphere and providing a photo opportunity.

Showcase how lighting enhances the use and experience of the space after dark?

The sign has been designed to work during both the day and night. During the day, the bold white face and contrasting black body and frame combine to make it highly visible and create a striking entry statement on a previously non activated park corner.

Demonstrate how lighting complements the design of the space by day?

The entry statement illuminates the entire corner both outwards to the road and inwards to Victoria Park. The lighting element reinforces the vibrancy and energy of the precinct and encourages engagement and interaction from visitor and locals.

Highlight lighting creativity, problem-solving and thinking-outside-the-box?

The control freak system allows the sign to be lit in a multitude of colour combinations and sequences also allowing every letter to be a different colour. The programming allows the LED’s to be fired at 2000 times per second which eliminated any visible flashing.

How did you take Dark Sky considerations (prevention of lighting pollution) into account for this project?

The entry statement is located on the corner of Victoria Park and within the light rail and Gold Coast Highway corridor.Surrounded by amenity park and pathway, the design of the entry statement only projects light from the lettering at the ground plane.
