Jetty Foreshore Redevelopment

Project Name: Jetty Foreshore Lighting Project

Practice Name: Coffs Harbour City Council

Project Address: Jordan Esplanade, Coffs Harbour

Demonstrate that a professional lighting design was undertaken for this project?

Lighting design was undertaken by Coffs Harbour City Council’s Landscape Architect and Electrical Engineer in conjunction with Fisher Architects. [undisclosed] provided a full design review, resulting in additional lighting, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards while ensuring minimizing impact on nocturnal animals.

What was the main design objective for the lighting scheme?

The new Jetty Foreshores redevelopment provides opportunity for recreation activities in a natural, coastal setting including night time walks to and from nearby restaurants, and is intended for a variety of events. This area is adjacent Solitary Islands marine park, and a prominent Shearwater nesting area, so lighting needed to both enhance night time use, providing aesthetic values, and minimize impact on nocturnal animals.

Demonstrate how lighting complements the design of the space by day?

The Boardwalk and beach steps are prominent fixtures overlooking Jetty beach, and are intended to provide minimal impact on the existing natural area while providing sufficient light for safety. LED lighting hidden in handrails and boardwalk kick rails provided the ideal solution.

Pole-top luminaires provide a stylish finish unobtrusively complementing the park in the daytime, complemented by featured stage and shelter lighting. Event power outlets were designed into the light poles, so that event power is unobtrusive when not in use.

Showcase how lighting enhances the use and experience of the space after dark?

Lighting spectacularly reflects off stainless steel handrails, providing a glittering show, and along the boardwalk the foot lighting enhances the feeling of safety and warmth, while minimizing light overflow to the beach and bush, allowing moonlit and starry nights over the water to provide their own brilliance.

Concentrating compliant lighting on paths and walkways results in reduction of lighting in natural areas, ensuring minimal impact on habitat for nocturnal animals.

Highlight lighting creativity, problem-solving and thinking-outside-the-box. What is unique or innovative about the use of lighting on the project? What unique challenges have been successfully overcome?

The exposed coastal conditions, and possible storm inundation, was addressed through a redesign of the pucks – fully potted (sealed) to protect from sand and water. Different lighting standards for car parking, stairs and paths were addressed through adaptation of different lighting levels and location. Separate circuits were included to allow sequencing of lighting according to the use of the park.

How did you take Dark Sky considerations into account for this project?

Shearwater nesting near the development required no white light, and no upward light spill.

Minimising upward waste light was achieved through use of a light housing on poles, and all downward directional lights, and as an added consideration, a light dimming system and separate circuits to allow for any required seasonal adjustments.
