    What was the main design objective for the lighting scheme?

    Northern Beaches Council brief was to create an inclusive streetscape that could be safely accessed day and night. The aim of the lighting design was to ensure a safe public space that attracted the community through quality, efficiency and consistency of the lighting.

    The challenge for Tract and Lighting Art+Science was to encapsulate the unique day time qualities where natural sunlight illuminates the space, and transfer this to a night time environment to create an evening economy and liveable town centre. Working closely with the lighting consultant as the concept developed, the lighting became an integral element of the final design.

    Demonstrate how lighting complements the design of the space by day?

    Defining the new public realm, the luminaires and their structural support form the primary focus of the space by providing visual comfort, illumination and the creation of a new mood in the day and at night.

    The swan art feature is illuminated with changing colour to create atmosphere and highlight the gateway entrance.

    Showcase how lighting enhances the use and experience of the space after dark?

    The design focuses on two types of lighting, pedestrian lighting along primary paths of travel which have been illuminated with controlled pathway LED pole mounted fixtures that maximises the light along the pathways and minimises the trespass of light into neighbouring properties

    To ensure the comfort of users, warm white LED lighting has been utilised to create an environment that is inviting.

    One of the primary objectives of the lighting strategy is to reduce the amount of power consumed by public lighting. LED fixtures have been utilised throughout the design and lighting is centrally monitored to minimise usage based on available daylight. The lighting is centrally controlled off site in conjunction with the water feature operations and irrigation system. The remote monitoring also manages water and power usage.

    Highlight lighting creativity, problem-solving and thinking-outside-the-box?

    The use of lights indicate flood levels in a new and bold way, bringing awareness to the floods in the darkness .The lighting has been creatively incorporated into existing old timber beams.

    The secondary layer of feature lighting within the catenary structure includes:

    • Catenary lighting interplayed with planting mesh. 
    • Colored LED lights highlighting the swan artwork.

    How did you take Dark Sky considerations (prevention of lighting pollution) into account for this project?

    To ensure that light spill has been kept to a minimum, especially to adjoining properties, no light is emitted above the horizontal plane for all pathway and area light fittings.
