DARK | kunanyi Bat Walk & Star Gazing

Attendees will get the chance to travel up kunanyi / Mount Wellington by bus and experience both the Bat Walk Tour and Star Gazing experience, with a break in between for conversation and light refreshments. Hosted by Dr Lisa Cawthen, Environmental Consultant & Educator and the Astronomical Society of Tasmania.

Experience the mountain after dark on a guided bat tour of kunanyi / Mount Wellington. Learn about these remarkable nocturnal mammals, their behaviour, habitats, and vital role in maintaining healthy ecosystems.

About the Tour Guide

Dr Lisa Cawthen, Environmental Consultant & Educator

Lisa a freelance environmental consultant and educator, with a speciality in bats and a passion for protecting our dark skies. Based in Lutruwita/Tasmania, she helps organisations care for their natural values and works with communities to foster stewardship of natural areas. She also works with the team at Faunatech, supporting people across Australia and the Asia-Pacific to survey bats through training and technical advice. Why bats? Because they’re the ultimate dark sky superheroes!

STAR GAZING

Join the Astronomical Society of Tasmania to peer through telescopes and catch a glimpse of the night sky — right from the waterfront. Depending on the weather, we may be able to view a number of fascinating objects, such as the Jewel Box, Gem and Pearl Open Star Clusters and the planet Mars.

As constellations such as Scorpius and Sagittarius rise in the eastern sky during the course of the evening, we may be able to view open star and globular clusters and the Lagoon Nebula.

Come along for an introduction and guided tour of these deep sky objects and constellations that can be viewed in the city and suburban sky.

What is included?

The tour will include bus transfers, activities on kunanyi and light refreshments.

Buses will depart from Hobart city at 7:15pm and return around 10:45pm.
