Please join us as we hear the stories behind three of our Landscape Architect members who have created their own opportunities to align with their work values, family relationships and honour the way they want to work. 

Hosted by AILA's Parents in Landscape Architecture Network (PLAN), an online community that aims to connect parents in a supportive environment. 

Hear the inspirational stories behind some of our members that have started their own practices each for their own unique reasons.  Each speaker will reflect on their career, how they're balancing business and family life and the challenges they have encountered along the way.

The session will be hosted by PLAN Members Kelsie Davies, KDLA Landscape Architecture and Cassandra Rose, Redbox Design Group.  The session will conclude with a discussion between our hosts and speakers and give the opportunity for attendees to ask questions.

About the speakers

Alison Cauchois, The Green Boutique
The Green Boutique was established by Alison Cauchois in 2014.  Alison is a UK born LA, now raising her family in Brisbane QLD.  After 15 years in the private and public sector. Alison set up her home practice to support and adapt around her family life.

Carla Ramsland, R Haus
18 months into her landscape architecture studio R Haus, Carla Ramsland has enjoyed a rapid transition from 20+ years in corporate practice.  Life as it was, is now different. Residing in Perth, Carla is a partner, mum to three young kids and big C survivor. The decision to establish her own business stemmed from a love of landscape architecture whilst needing to create career / family balance to prioritize what is important in life.  ‘Be where your feet are’ (Scott O’Neil) is a quote that stopped Carla in her tracks 9 months into R Haus, and ultimately changed her perspective on what it looked like to own a ‘small studio’. 

Vanessa Margetts, MudMap Studio
Vanessa is the founding director of MudMap Studio, a Landscape Architecture practise that focuses on community driven landscape architecture and public art.  Vanessa believes that good design is about listening and provides opportunities to tell stories and share knowledge of place. Vanessa has recently relocated to Perth after living in Broome for almost a decade. Vanessa brings design and visual arts experience to her work gathered while working with communities around Australia and overseas in Denmark, East Timor, India, Honduras, Columbia and Brazil.
