Domic (Russian for House of Domes), is an off-the-grid eco lair on the doorstep of Noosa National Park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The house is nestled into the sand dune, wrapping its roof and walls in a blanket of natural vegetation endemic to the area. The abode is cave like and dramatically connected to the natural and primeval surroundings.
‘A Rockstar of a garden, but a star with environmental cred. The Domic garden blurs the interface of site landscape and building with the garden as architecture and architecture as garden. Challengingly sited adjoining Noosa National Park the project embraces and allows itself to be sculptured and engulfed by the forms and vegetation of Sunshine Beach. Leadership from the Landscape Architects included innovative thought and solved complex problems of constructing curved roof gardens and green walls and multi-faceted weathered steel facades. Designed as a ‘self-reliant eco lair’, Domic is a fine example of how uber-luxury living can integrate into the environment rather than be imposed upon.’ - Awards jury citation
2020 Jury Chair, Deb Robbins will introduce the award-winning project before handing over to James Birrell (formerly James Birrell Design Lab, now Place Design Group inc. James Birrell Design Lab) to talk through the challenges and collaboration needed to produce the award-winning outcome. This will be followed by a Q & A session.
