Alan Collins is a professor of geology who is interested in how the deep earth evolution of the planet has controlled and governed earth surface systems (atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere). He has a BSc (Hons.) degree from Imperial College, London (1993), and PhD from The University of Edinburgh (1997), that examined the tectonics of SW Turkey.Alan has worked in Madagascar, East Africa, Brazil, Thailand, India and East Antarctica as well as throughout Australia. His on-going research uses various aspects of geoscience to answer geologically significant questions in deep time. He was awarded an Australian Research Council 'Future Fellowship' in 2012 and the S.W. Carey Medal in 2021 for excellence in Tectonics. Alan Collins leads the Tectonics and Earth Systems Group (TES) in Adelaide and with his team he works on the geological stories locked in the rocks of the Flinders Ranges.
