Deepa's research explores the relations humans have with their environment, and the knowledge and institutions formed on the basis on these relations. She has explored this theme in water governance arrangements within agricultural regions in Tasmania and the Murray-Darling Basin, using social research methods and systems approaches. More recently, Deepa is exploring how water institutions can be decolonised to create opportunities for First Peoples, especially the Tasmanian Aboriginal people of Lutruwita, to exercise self-determination and achieve positive outcomes for their communities.

Deepa teaches Systems Thinking, Farm Business Economics and Water Management to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
