AILA National Archive/History Project

AILA National is pleased to announce the formal commencement of the AILA National Archive/History Project. This project aims to collect, preserve and share the legacy of landscape architecture in Australia to increase scholarship, interpretation, exhibition, protection and participation.

The project’s Working Group is comprised of members from across the respective AILA Chapters, including: Catherin Bull (QLD); Verity Campbell (AILA Administration); Tony Cox (NT); Jerry de Gryse (Tas); Graeme Hopkins (SA); Annabel Murray (NSW); Julian Raxworthy (ACT); Grant Revell (WA); and Andrew Saniga (Vic).

Project Objectives

This project is national in scale and will:

  • Increase cultural and intellectual accessibility, continuity and curiosity by students, researchers, practitioners, related professionals and the general public;
  • Provide a repository strategy to prioritise archival activities and related projects, including the identification and evaluation of existing related archives that should be linked to the AILA repository;
  • Serve as a national and international accessible digital source of records to preserve our landscape architectural national estate;
  • Articulate leadership and influence through the record keeping of land, culture and community materials in urban and regional Australia;
  • Identify representative examples and/or significant landscape architecture projects, sites, oral histories and their documentation, for further research, protection and/or preservation.
  • Communicate regularly with all AILA members to ensure the best ideas and practicalities are embodied within the project.
  • Develop public and private funding strategies to sustain the project.

Project Accessibility

The project will explore and define how the AILA Archive could suitably relate to larger digital and public history projects nationally and internationally, opening Australian landscape architecture to new audiences and better supporting relationships within and between allied archives, museums, disciplines, and related communities.

Project Contact

Members will be encouraged to participate in the project in due course. Further details are available from Project Administrator Verity Campbell at [email protected]
