The AILA Landscape Architecture Awards program provides a key vehicle for the promotion of the achievements and work of landscape architects in Australia.
The Awards process is an opportunity for public and peer recognition of landscape architect’s work, and demonstrates to industry, business, government and the wider community the positive impact the profession has on Australian lives through the planning and design of the built and natural environments.

South Australia celebrates best landscapes
Sanctuary Adelaide Zoo hosted the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) South Australia Awards on Friday 20 June. Over 20 projects competed for awards across categories spanning civic landscape, health and education, parks and open space, gardens and more.
AILA SA Jury Chair Warwick Keates led this year’s panel of jurors. “What emerges clearly from this year’s awards is a profession that is a champion of the environment, people, culture and place,” Keates said. “We continue to demonstrate that landscape architects are respectful, inclusive and incredibly innovative.”
Creek project sweeps the pool with two Awards of Excellence
Breakout Creek / Purruna Pari Stage 3 forms part of the River Torrens redevelopment — and includes over 6.2km of walking trails and shared paths, 11,400m2 of permanently vegetated wetlands, five viewing decks, a new river crossing and accessible boardwalk. Designed by TCL with Green Adelaide, City of Charles Sturt, and City of West Torrens, the project won Awards of Excellence for both Land Management and Parks and Open Space.
The Jury praised the project — describing it as “an exemplary demonstration of landscape architectural leadership in the design and delivery of complex blue/green infrastructure”. Further, the Jury asserted : “It marks the conclusion of a 30-year vision to connect Karrawirra Pari’s freshwater and saltwater systems. Importantly, it reconnects people to place — through meaningful and enduring design.”

Breakout Creek / Purruna Pari Stage 3 also won a Climate Positive Design award, along with a Water for Life Commendation.
“Brave” garden impresses Jury
Congratulations too to Gumnut Garden, a residential design by Oxigen and the recipient of this year’s coveted Garden Award of Excellence. The design also took home the Water for Life Award. The Jury’s citation was effusive: “Unusually brave within both front and rear yards, the garden showcases an array of local and nearby native plant species that support biodiversity. Additionally, it provides habitat whilst simultaneously creating a series of spaces for the occupants — and views from within indoor spaces.”

Dunstan Adventure Playground also displays design bravery
Designed by City of Norwood Payneham & St Peters and CLOVER Green Space, the Dunstan Adventure Playground in St Peters was the winner of a Play Spaces’ Landscape Architecture Award. According to the Jury, “the playground design is brave and also encourages children and parents to be brave — just as it did in the seventies”.

AILA SA 2025 Awards
All winners of an AILA SA Award will now proceed to the National Landscape Architecture Awards, to be announced in October in Hobart/Nipaluna.
AILA is the peak body for landscape architecture in Australia, championing quality design for public open spaces, stronger communities, and greater environmental stewardship.
What is landscape architecture + how does it benefit all South Australians?
Landscape architecture brings nature into the heart of daily life, shaping parks, open spaces, wetlands, streets and public places that invite us to gather, connect, and belong.
Well-designed landscapes strengthen local economies by attracting visitors and creating jobs, but their deeper value lies in cooling our cities, restoring ecosystems, supporting well-being, and caring for Country.
The 2025 AILA South Australia Awards celebrate the projects and practitioners reimagining how we live with landscape and each other.
