The Landscape Architecture Awards jury serves an important role in determining Awards in recognition of exceptional Landscape Architecture practice. The jury awards practices and members in confirmation of talent, commitment, and design excellence.

Jury Chair: Kate Luckraft

Driven by a desire to see delivery of public spaces that are loved by communities while providing habitat for other living creatures, Kate is an accomplished designer of public places. Kate’s advocacy for the development of the landscape architecture profession has led to her roles as tertiary educator, design review panellist, design advisor, mentor, and NSW State government design lead.

Dr Simon Kilbane

Simon is the discipline chair in landscape architecture at the University of Western Australia and leads the landscape and environmental consultancy, Rhizome. With a diverse experience across public, private and academic sectors both in Australia and overseas, he is driven by the pressing need for novel solutions that articulate and strengthen an enduring connection between people, place and ecology.

Dr Danièle Hromek

Dr Danièle Hromek is a Budawang/Murramarang of Dhurga/Yuin and Burrier/Dharawal ancestry. She centres Country in her design process in order it can be the driver for the design of the built environment. Working at the intersection of architecture, urban design, performance design and fine arts, Danièle is a spatial designer, cultural advisor and researcher. Danièle’s research contributes an understanding of the Indigenous experience and comprehension of space. Danièle is director of Djinjama, offering cultural design and research.

Watkin McLennan

Watkin is a landscape architect and Adviser for the Office of the Victorian Government Architect. Holding a Bachelor's of Science in vegetation ecology and a Master’s in Landscape Architecture, he works across scales from landscape-led urban design to medium density housing, always looking for connections between human and non-human systems. Past experience at Denmark’s SLA and ongoing involvement at the University of Melbourne expand his practice, motivating him to grow with and contribute to Australian landscape architecture.

Anne-Marie Pisani

Anne-Marie Pisani is a Snr Assoc Landscape Architect with over 25 years experience across private and government sectors and is the First People’s Partnership and Design Lead with Aspect Studios. Anne-Marie advocates and practises culturally responsive and meaningful design processes with First People’s communities and encourages an understanding and respect of ‘Indigenous ways of knowing’, understanding the value that local community knowledge brings to design. She is immediate past co-chair of AILA’s National ‘Connection to Country’ Committee and is a design review panelist.

Candy Rosmarin

Candy has over fifteen years’ experience working as a landscape architect in a local government environment with significant experience in designing public open spaces. Her landscape architecture experience is supported by previous work as an architect, with nearly 20 years of experience as an architect, delivering some high-profile projects such as the Nelson Mandela Square. She was a member of the AILA QLD executive for 4 years. Candy has won Queensland AILA Awards for Design Excellence and an AILA national award, and was on the national award jury in 2019 and part of the creative committee for land-e scape.

Assoc. Prof. Sally Waller

Sally is an Associate Professor in the SUT School of Science, Computing, and Engineering Technologies and an Indigenous Research Fellow with the CSIRO AquaWatch Australia program. Sally has been a Cultural Ambassador with AILA since 2021. Sally is a multidisciplinary technical professional and business leader with over 20 years' experience throughout Australia and overseas. She has also worked extensively across the private industry consulting, government, and not-for-profit sectors. Sally embeds her cultural and community values in her ways of working. Sally also successfully runs Yuurrawaang Services, an Indigenous consulting and advisory business.

Travis Wright

Travis guides delivery of Oxigen’s urban landscape, civic, cultural, regional, and major infrastructure projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams to prioritise strong environmental and social equitable outcomes. This interdisciplinary thinking and collaborative approach has delivered major projects for government and the private sector that focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship. Travis' technical skills as a landscape architect is complemented by a commitment to climate action, social inclusion and biodiversity.

Fiona Morrison (chair) 

Fiona Morrison is a highly respected landscape architect based in New South Wales. With over two decades of experience, she has led projects that promote innovation across natural landscapes and urban environments, creating spaces that are both functional and environmentally resilient. Fiona's work focuses on enhancing community well-being through thoughtful, inclusive design. Her dedication to sustainable practices and innovative planning has made her a key influencer in landscape architecture across NSW.  

Anna Chauvel   

Anna Chauvel is a city shaper, landscape architect, and urban designer. As an early adopter of placemaking principles, Anna has shaped her design approach around creating public spaces that are sociable, inclusive, equitable, and sustainable. In 2010, Anna co-founded the design studio PLACE Laboratory, which has since evolved into a think tank dedicated to advancing place-based design for public spaces. The studio is committed to crafting meaningful urban environments that positively impact people’s lives. Anna’s landscape architectural and urban design leadership combines guiding vision with persuasive passion to create successful places.  

Ian Andrews 

Ian is a Registered Landscape Architect with over 30 years experience working in private practice, consultancy and in local government in Western Sydney. He is currently the Executive Manager Strategic Design and Enablement at Campbelltown City Council which he commenced in February 2018. Current projects include the Billabong Parklands, Scenic Hills Framework Study, Urban Greening Plan, Marsden Park Playspace, West Invest Landscape Projects and environmental works along the Georges River Open Space Corridor.  

Kate Whatman   

Kate is a Landscape Architect who through her interest in travel, has had the opportunity to live and work on projects throughout the Middle East, and more recently, public and private practice on the mid-north coast of New South Wales. Kate enjoys creating meaningful landscapes that promote community wellbeing and enhance a sense of place. With a young family and living in an ecologically rich area, Kate is motivated by the importance of our role in shaping the landscape for next generations.  

Melissa Cate Christ  

Melissa Cate Christ is a Sessional Academic at UNSW, a registered landscape architect (Canada), and the founding director of transverse studio. Previously she taught at the University of Technology Sydney, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, University of Hong Kong and the University of Toronto, and worked at GGN and DuToit, Allsopp, Hillier. Melissa has a PhD from UNSW, a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Toronto and a Bachelor of Liberal Arts from St. John’s College.  

Paul Melrose 

Paul Melrose is National Product and Place Manager at Walker Corporation. His expertise is Place Making, Urban Design, Open Space Planning, Landscape Architecture and Residential Product Development across large scale residential masterplanned communities in Australia. Paul collaborates with government agencies, councils, industry, academia and elected representatives, to facilitate sustainable community outcomes with clear vision, product and place propositions respectful of cultural and community values.  

Roger Jasprizza 

Roger is a Landscape Architect, Horticulturist and member of the NSW State Design Review Panel with over 35 years experience. He is focused on the creation of great places for the community, while balancing the needs of authorities and stakeholders. His approach is based on the union of both classic and contemporary design principles working to establish and strengthen connectivity between landscape and built form. He has extensive expertise in delivering complex landscape and urban renewal projects, specialising in the design of public realm, streetscapes, park and waterfront projects. Roger draws from a wealth of experience to navigate complex planning requirements to create loveable community places.  

Andrew Turnbull 

Andrew is a Registered Landscape Architect  and Urban Design professional based in Sydney. He brings a national and international perspective as our ShadeSmart Juror in 2025. Andrew has served on the AILA Awards jury in previous years and various professional awards programs. In recent years he is focused on advancing a ‘public health approach to planning and design’ spanning policy, research and design. Andrew has previously been a strategic advisor to Cancer Council NSW – Shade Working Group and Chair of the AILA NSW ‘ShadeSmart’ Advisory Group. 

After 35 years in private sector large design practice, in 2019 he transitioned his business ownership in Scott Carver, to pursue other professional interests, contributions to AILA and international advisory consultancy.

Chair – David Hatherly

David Hatherly is a highly regarded Registered Landscape Architect and the Director of Vee Design, bringing over 30 years of experience in urban design, public realm design, and placemaking. His expertise spans large-scale master planning, open space, urban revitalisation, and community-focused projects across Australia. Passionate about delivering meaningful and enduring places, David collaborates closely with clients, stakeholders, and communities to shape responsive, people-centred environments. David is a past AILA Queensland President and National Board member, reflecting his commitment to industry leadership. 

James Birrell

James Birrell is a Registered Landscape Architect internationally renowned for his Urban Design and Placemaking Strategy, James is a second generation designer who has dedicated his career to improving lifestyles and experiences for the communities he works with. Having established James Birrell Design Lab in 2013, James merged with Place Design Group in 2019 and has built a stellar suite of local, national and international design, strategy and placemaking experience. As former President of the Maroochydore Revitalisation Association, James led a series of successful placemaking initiatives, injecting over $13 million per annum into the local economy over the course of five short years. 

Cathryn Chatburn

Cathryn is an award-winning urban designer and Landscape Architect. She is an ardent advocate for collaboration and effective design and development processes to achieve great project outcomes. She is one of Australia’s leading urban designers and her contribution to the country’s-built environment spans the nation’s capital, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia. With more than 30 years’ experience Cathryn has accumulated dual proficiencies in both policy and practice and is also an active member of several Design Review Panels nationally.

Mark Perkins

Mark is based in the Wet Tropics of Far North Queensland and is the Principal Landscape Architect at Cairns Regional Council. He is also Director and Principal Landscape Architect at Ennismore Field Landscape Architects and Solar Glare. Mark provides Expert Witness in the Land and Environment Court of NSW in Landscape Character and Visual Impact Assessment. He presented at the BCSLA Annual Conference, British Columbia, in 2017 and was published in Landscape Australia Magazine in 2018.

Greg Kitson

Greg is Wakka Wakka, a qualified and practicing regional and town planner (UQ Hons), completing his PhD through the Cities Research Institute at Grifith Univeristy and currently working as a consultant specialising in Indigenous Community Planning, including planning with Country.  

Sophie Richards

Sophie Richards is a graduate Landscape Architect at McGregor Coxall with a double degree in Landscape Architecture and Environnmental Science and recipient of the 2024 Karl Langer Award. Her philosophy is underpinned by a deep commitment to justice for all species. Sophie believes we must go beyond conventional ‘sustainable’ or ‘liveable’ goals to create urban centers which actively restore, regenerate and repair ecological and social systems. Sophie is guided by curiosity, connection and stewardship, and draws on research experience, knowledge of ecological systems and her passion for the environment. 

Brooke Williams

Brooke is an urban designer passionate about creating vibrant, connected communities through inclusive decision-making in the built environment. With over 17 years of experience, she has championed placemaking and led award-winning projects. Brooke’s achievements include launching Fourfold Studio, co-founding UR{BNE} Collective, co-hosting Australia’s first Diner en Blanc, and serving on Brisbane City Council’s Independent Design Advisory Panel. Her work fosters innovative collaboration with local stakeholders to shape more dynamic and inclusive urban spaces.

Dr Danielle Jackman

Danielle is a political scientist working in public health, currently as Policy and Advocacy Specialist at Cancer Council Queensland. Danielle is passionate about championing strategic advocacy across the NFP sector to drive increased investment in preventative health. She is a member of the Cancer Council National Skin Cancer Committee and the Skin Cancer Prevention Queensland Network. Currently, Danielle convenes a Local Government Community of Practice on Sun Safety, supported by Queensland Health, that has a focus on workforce sun safety, community health promotion, and the importance of built and natural shade infrastructure.

Yan Chen

 As a multifaceted professional with a keen interest in photography, hiking, gardening, and landscape design, Yan is dedicated to fostering meaningful connections between people, communities and Country. With a diverse background that includes working with international multi-disciplinary firms and local boutique studios since 2008, Yan currently brings experience to his lead designer role at Aspect Brisbane. He concentrates on developing compelling concepts, promoting effective collaboration with consultants, clients, and stakeholders, and supporting fellow team members to help them achieve their full potential.

Warwick Keates – 2025 AILA SA Jury CHAIR 

Warwick is a director at WAX Design and has over thirty years of experience practising in the United Kingdom, the Middle East, and Australia. He believes authentic collaboration and co-creation are fundamental to creating places people love and enjoy. Warwick has always been aware of the power and responsibility that comes with being a landscape architect and that what we create exists well beyond the lifespan of the designer. Warwick’s approach to design springs from his belief that landscape architects have a responsibility to the past, present and future.  

Lisel McLeay 

Lisel McLeay is a passionate design champion and highly creative Principal Landscape Architect and Urban Designer at GD Studia. 

Lisel knows the power of that one great idea to transform thinking, a project and a place. A fantastic original thought excites everyone involved and pushes design and the industry forward. There is nothing like it! This focus on creativity, design quality and beauty drives Lisel’s work and team. Based on her 18 years of experience in private consultancy, Lisel provides carefully considered and thoughtful advice and will enthusiastically advocate for that next great idea. She is often sought to critique, review and provide insight, while also loving the challenge of delivering a new technical design, space or high-level strategy. 

Lisel appreciates watching Adelaide and South Australia succeed and evolve into a more resilient and connected place of culture that supports living. Landscape Architecture helps Lisel to influence these positive changes and embed wonderful ideas into the City that she loves.  

Sophie Chevillard 

Sophie is a senior registered landscape architect that has local and international experience in Landscape Architecture and Urban Design, including the detailed design of urban projects that promote the sustainability of our environment and communities. She has gained a broad range of skills, from concept design to project documentation and delivery, and worked on a wide range of projects. She has a strong interest in nature-based solutions, well-designed urban spaces and delivering environmentally, socially and culturally positive projects. 

Dave Gregory  

Dave creatively plans and designs places which enhance community well-being and environmental sustainability, improving people’s connection to each other and to nature. Dave has over 16 years industry experience working as a Landscape Architect and Urban Designer in leading design practices both in Australia and New Zealand, as well as for local Government. With specialist interest in green infrastructure and natural systems, Dave has received national award recognition for his work in urban strategy and greening. 

Lin Markus

Lin is a senior landscape architect and has experience working in Australia and overseas. Her expertise lies in implementing responsive designs that honour and capture the essence of each unique location, while prioritising the user experience and the creation of practical and enjoyable spaces.  

Lin's experience covers projects of various scales, with a particular focus on community and public realm environments. She also has an ongoing passion for art and always seeks opportunities to integrate or draw inspiration from this in her design work. Lin is an effective communicator in relation to both client engagement and subconsultant coordination. She brings a passion for the expression of stories of place, cultural narratives and history through creative and innovative placemaking and landscape architecture. 

Dr. Namrata Joshi-Vishwasrao 

Dr. Namrata Joshi-Vishwasrao is a Registered Landscape Architect at the Office for Design and Architecture SA. She has over 15 years professional experience in the public sector and private practice, working on diverse range of projects in the urban and landscape realm. Her work has focused on sustainability, blue-green infrastructure, and traditional knowledge integration. Additionally, Namrata is academic at University of Adelaide where she shares her passion and knowledge with aspiring professionals.   

David Bills

David is an urban planner and immediate former Vice President of the Planning Institute of Australia SA Division. He has extensive knowledge and expertise in urban planning and design, sustainability and climate integration. He is currently Manager of Low Carbon and Circular Economy at the City of Adelaide but has a career spanning consulting, local and territory governments across a diverse range of complex multi-disciplinary projects.

Chair: Dr Bridget Keane, AILA RLA

Lecturer, Learning and Teaching, Faculty of Architecture Building and Planning, University of Melbourne

Bridget is an academic practitioner focusing on the role of design in the context of climate crisis and positioning the designer as one of many interacting agents within complex ecological, material, and economic systems. Three threads have informed her research and practice: Developing and implementing teaching models that explore intersections between academic, industry and creative practice; Examining disciplinary lineages and reflecting on these in response to the climate crisis; and Design of projects that envisage alternate futures in response to the effects of extractive industries and overconsumption.

Henry Crothers, AILA RLA

Design Director, LandLAB 

Henry is an award-winning Urban Design and Landscape Architect with a particular interest and expertise in the design of the public realm and landscape-led urbanism. He has provided design leadership to some of the most significant urban regeneration and public realm projects in New Zealand including the Wynyard Quarter Redevelopment, Auckland Downtown Framework, Queenstown Town Centre Masterplan, Tauranga City Centre Masterplan, Avon River Park Masterplan and Te Ara Tututuku Headland Park at Auckland's Wynyard Quarter. He has also provided the creative design leadership for a range of innovative, sustainable and award-winning public realm projects across New Zealand. Henry is past president of the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA).  

Joanna Bush, AILA RLA 

Unit Manager, Urban Design, Merri-bek City Council 

A passionate advocate for green infrastructure and liveable cities, Jo is an experienced leader and designer with over 20 years in private and public practice. Her experience across landscape architecture, urban design and open space planning have seen her lead award-winning teams in multiple Victorian local governments and deliver design excellence through major capital projects. With a strong focus on public realm design and planning, Jo brings a collaborative, integrated approach to shaping our built environment. 

Matthew Mackay, AILA RLA 

Director, Aspect Studios 

Matthew is a highly experienced Landscape Architect and Studio Director of ASPECT Studios. He has led the design of many AILA award-winning projects over the course of his career. Matthew is a member of the City of Melbourne's Melbourne Design Review Panel and has undertaken lecturing and led numerous design studios for the University of Melbourne and RMIT. Matthew is a passionate advocate for design excellence in the practice of Landscape Architecture, and the delivery of outstanding built projects. 

Shay McMahon 

Indigenous Design Lead, Jacobs 

Shay McMahon, an Eora/Yuin woman, is an urban designer with a background in Architecture and Planning. She is passionate about exploring how culture influences design. As one of the few First Nation design practitioners in Australia and Jacobs' Indigenous design lead, she works closely with design teams to integrate First Nations knowledge into projects. Her efforts ensure that these projects reflect First Nations living, culture, and values, seamlessly incorporating cultural considerations throughout all her work. 

Prue Slatyer, AILA FRLA (TAS)

University of Tasmania 

Prue is a retired architect and landscape architect with over 30 years’ experience in these disciplines. Prue's qualifications have enabled her to work in a variety of roles, in and beyond the traditional disciplinary boundaries, where she enjoyed working in multi-disciplinary teams. She has worked in small private practices, large multidisciplinary consultancies, local government and academia in Hobart, Sydney and Hong Kong. Projects which Prue has worked on have received national and state awards from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, and state awards from the Planning Institute of Australia. 

Paul Thompson, AILA FRLA

Principal, Plant Design 

Paul Thompson commenced his design and construction firm in 1970, specialising in Australian plants. He is a specialist consultant to several landscape practices. Many projects winning major awards from AILA, IFLA, RAIA and others. Paul's work as a consultant designer is diverse ranging from private gardens to large acreages of public, industrial, defence and rural land including work on seven botanic gardens. He has also authored two books, Water in your Garden and Australian Planting Design.  

Observer: Fiona Runjia Chen, AILA Graduate Member 

Landscape Architect, Rush Wright Associates 

Fiona Runjia Chen is an emerging landscape architect dedicated to advancing sustainable built environments through thoughtful design and innovation. Her thesis, The Afterlife of Concrete, received the Jones & Whitehead Excellence in Design Research Award and the Hassell Travelling Scholarship. With experience across China, the U.S., and Australia, Fiona brings a global perspective to her work, exploring the intersection of design, sustainability, and cultural perceptions of landscapes. 

Guest Juror – ShadeSmart: Justine Osborne

SunSmart Advocacy and Policy Manager, Cancer Council Victoria

Justine has more than 20 years’ health promotion experience working across all aspects of Cancer Council Victoria’s SunSmart Program. Justine is responsible for coordinating the successful planning, implementation and evaluation of policies to reduce UV exposure and create healthy environments for communities. This involves the promotion and advocacy of shade contributing to shade planning considerations, research and supportive tools and resources. Justine was a guest juror for the 2023 and 2024 AILA VIC Awards (ShadeSmart category).

Amanda Mannolin

Amanda Mannolini is the Alliance Manager of the multi-disciplinary Transport and Urban Design team at the City of Perth which plays a key role in creating inclusive and enduring public spaces within the city.  Trained in fine arts and planning and design (Master of Landscape Architecture) at the University of Melbourne, Amanda has a wide range of mobility, urban design and strategic development experience spanning over 20 years in both the public and private sectors. Her career has focused on the planning and design of public realm projects with a ‘people-first’, evidence-based approach which was heavily influenced by her time working on Gehl Architects ‘Public Spaces and Public Life’ for Perth in 2009 and attending numerous masterclasses in Copenhagen. 

Peter Hillman 

Peter Hillman is a Director at Urbis and a Registered Landscape Architect with over 20 years of experience delivering complex projects as part of large, multidisciplinary teams. He takes a holistic and integrated approach to landscape design, considering influences beyond the project boundary to create site-responsive, innovative solutions.
With extensive experience across Western Australia, Peter has a deep understanding of the environmental, cultural, and community values that shape these landscapes. He is passionate about city greening, green infrastructure, and increasing urban tree canopy to create more sustainable and resilient cities. Collaborative by nature, Peter thrives on working with consultants and stakeholders to develop vibrant, context-driven outcomes that enhance the public realm. 

Emma Young

Emma Young is a digital reporter and sub-editor for WAtoday, specialising in the environment and urban planning. She has won nine WA Media Awards and three times been shortlisted for the Arthur Lovekin Prize for Excellence in Journalism. She is the author of two novels published by Fremantle Press, and was in 2024 shortlisted for the WA Writer’s Fellowship at the WA Premier’s Book Awards.
Emma was this year nominated for City of South Perth Auspire Community Citizen of the Year for her work founding and running a volunteer organisation that cares for urban bushland.  

Joel Barker

Joel Barker is an award winning landscape architect and founding partner of Fremantle based landscape architecture firm, See Design Studio. Having worked in London, Sydney and Perth, Joel has a particular interest in the role landscape architects can play in improving the quality of urban infill projects. 

Jon Everett

Jon Everett is a Senior Associate at Plan E Landscape Architects with over 19 years of professional experience. Following his studies at UWA Jon moved to London working on a diverse range of projects in the UK, Europe and the Middle East. Building on his international work Jon has since focussed on complex urban realm and civic projects which shape our cities and has been involved in the design of Perth City Link over the past 10 years. Jon actively contributes to the profession, through tutoring at UWA and currently sits on the AILA WA Executive. 

Eleanor Reuvers

Eleanor is a registered landscape architect with extensive experience in both the public and private sector.  From working on small projects that benefit urban biodiversity to large scale visitor planning with complex spatial, temporal and cultural components, she enjoys contributing to positive outcomes for people, places and the environment. She currently works with the fabulous team at the WA Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions.
