About the AILA Landscape Architecture Awards Program

The AILA Landscape Architecture Awards program provides a key vehicle for the promotion of the achievements and work of landscape architects in Australia.

The Awards process is an opportunity for public and peer recognition of landscape architect’s work, and demonstrates to industry, business, government and the wider community the positive impact the profession has on Australian lives through the planning and design of the built and natural environments.

ShadeSmart Award: New AILA SA Landscape Architecture Award

We are delighted to announce a new State Award will be part of this year’s Awards program. AILA’s partnership with the Cancer Council NSW & Cancer Institute NSW to advance the ShadeSmart Program is an important opportunity for Landscape Architects to lead quality planning and design for Shade and UV skin cancer prevention in Australia through the delivery of sustainable public spaces and healthy communities.

Regional Achievement

This is a cross category award given in recognition of landscape architecture that has made a significant difference to improving the healthy communities and/or built and natural environments of regional Australia. Chapter Executives in collaboration with the Chapter Jury will determine the eligible key regions for their Chapter program.

Climate Positive Design

This is a cross category Award given in recognition of landscape architecture projects that have shown significant contribution to climate positive design. Entrants may opt in to this award and provide additional documentation on how their project has shown a strong effort toward climate mitigation, climate adaptation while also contribution to social, environmental and or economic benefits. Refer to the entry guide (page 4) for additional documentation required to submit for this award.

2024 AILA SA Future Leaders Student and Graduate Awards

These two awards recognise achievement in design, planning, communications and research that is based upon the development of innovative, creative and practical solutions to landscape architectural challenges. Additional Award Categories

SA 2024 ShadeSmart Award

Projects in this category will be acknowledged for their contribution to  best practice Shade & UV planning, design, and innovative practice.  The award winners design will reinforce the pivotal role that LA’s play in the design of public spaces and advocating for sustainable and healthy communities and demonstrate leadership in sustainable and climate responsive practice at a time of national and international focus.

The judges will be looking at the following criteria :

• Demonstrated best practice in policy and planning for shade and UV effectiveness,
• Innovative design that delivers structured and natural shade outcomes to support healthy 
living, human wellbeing, and climate responsive solutions,
• Contribution by Landscape Architects to ‘ShadeSmart’ research, education and/or 
community engagement

2024 Healthy Parks Healthy People SA Award

We are delighted to confirm the Healthy Parks Healthy People (HPHP) SA Award will run again in 2024, as an initiative of HPHP SA and AILA SA that recognises a built landscape architecture project that best demonstrates the Six Key Principles for Quality Open Space as detailed in the document, Creating Greener Places for Healthy and Sustainable Communities. Projects will be eligible for consideration based on the entries captured as part of the 2023 AILA SA Landscape Architecture Awards program – there is no separate entry process or fee.  More info coming soon.

Carina Green

Jury Chair

Carina brings a diverse knowledgebase and a passion for innovation and design leadership. Working in large multi-disciplinary teams she has been able to hone her skills in effective design communication. She is committed to creating thriving spaces, placing emphasis on creating designs that respond sensitively to the environment, and exceed community and cultural needs. With more than 15 years’ experience in both private and the public sector, Carina currently leads a team of landscape architects and designers at the City of Adelaide and has had the unique opportunity to work on transformational projects that not only push boundaries within a challenging political environment, but deliver and implement innovative, quality, and inclusive design outcomes. She is an advocate for fostering open communication, facilitating collaboration and strengthening connections and bringing a holistic and adaptive approach to design. As an active registered member of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects, holding a position on the AILA SA Executive Committee, she continues to be inspired through mentoring others, and supporting and encouraging professional development. 

Stephanie Rogers

Stephanie Rogers is a registered landscape architect with over nine years experience in both local government and private practice. She has worked on a variety of public space projects within Adelaide including streetscapes, open spaces and playspaces. Stephanie is passionate about the integration of green infrastructure within the urban environment and is an advocate for the provision and preservation of quality green spaces. Stephanie has served as an Executive Member of the SA chapter of the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA) for the last 5 years. 

Samantha Godakumbura 

Samantha Godakumbura is a graduate landscape architect at Tract Consultants. Moving from regional Victoria to Adelaide, she completed a Bachelor of Architectural Design followed by a Master of Landscape Architecture and graduated in 2021. Over the past few years, Sam has worked on local, interstate and international projects - ranging from boutique residential design to large scale infrastructure projects. In her spare time, Sam enjoys being outside cycling, skating, or wandering around Adelaide’s green spaces.  

Josephine Evans

Josephine is an Architect and Co-Director of design practice JPE Design Studio. Specialising in a co-design process across multiple disciplines, the Adelaide based studio fosters an integrated approach to architecture, interior design, landscape architecture and urban design. JPE’s projects are diverse in scale from urban furniture and public realm to commercial developments, master plans and renewal projects. Josephine‘s work has spanned public, education and commercial projects in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne. An advocate for the arts, culture and creative industries, Josephine has led the creative exchange at JPE with local artists and collaborations with local and global design practices. She has served as a councillor with the Institute of Architects since 2019, establishing the SA Creative Industries Think Tank, a platform to reveal and champion SA’s creative ecosystem. 

Tim Conybeare

Tim has over twenty years’ experience as an urban designer and landscape architect and has built a strong reputation across South Australia for his work in leading teams to deliver strategic and enduring visions for urban and natural environments. He has successfully delivered a number of renowned projects and is an expert in working on complex sites, using creative design processes to develop and instill high levels of client confidence. Tim is an experienced collaborator and regularly draws upon allied professionals, artists and social planners to ensure the best outcome for any project. As an Australian practice leader with ASPECT Studios, he champions working with First Nations People, adopting a design approach that seeks a deep connection with the landscape. Since 2011, Tim has held a position on the Design Review Panel with the Office of Design and Architecture, South Australia.   

Corey Turner

I am the director of Aboriginal Urban Design and Southern Cultural Immersion; both are 100% Aboriginal owned and operated businesses. Within Aboriginal Urban Design we organise and facilitate a co-design process between Aboriginal community members and other key stakeholders for major infrastructure projects. We successfully engage local Aboriginal community members and Elders to create a vision for their future through interpretive urban design. We work closely with elders around their stories, heritage and culture, allowing their narrative to be told through built form. Some major projects like including the Main South Road Duplication, Ovingham Level Crossing Removal and Mike Turtur Bikeway Upgrade. Southern Cutltural Immersion is the business arm that manages the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre at Warriparinga and offering a breadth of experiences to the wider Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community. We conduct tours, education programs and training. Today we have delivering Cultural Awareness Training to over 700 participants in the Adelaide region, with key clients including Greening Adelaide, City of Burnside, Origin, AGL, Department of Environment and Water (DEW), Indigenous Business Australia (IBA) and Flinders University. 
 

Travis Wright

Travis guides delivery of Oxigen’s urban landscape, civic, cultural, regional, and major infrastructure projects, coordinating multidisciplinary teams to prioritise strong environmental and social equitable outcomes. This interdisciplinary thinking and collaborative approach has delivered major projects for government and the private sector that focuses on innovation and entrepreneurship. Travis' technical skills as a landscape architect is complemented by a commitment to climate action, social inclusion and biodiversity. This commitment has reinforced Oxigen’s reputation as one of Australia’s leading specialised landscape architecture practices.
 

Entry Process

Entry into the AILA Landscape Architecture Awards program is limited to a person, or a team where the landscape architectural component is under the substantive control or direction of a person, who is a Registered Landscape Architect or Member (financial) and principal of the practice (who is an owner or formal licensee of the copyright in the work being entered).

To be eligible for entry, projects (where applicable) must have at least reached practical completion and be in all other respects complete to the point of enabling proper assessment by the Jury, no later than 31 December 2023. Entries will be considered in the Chapter in which the project is located, regardless of the business address of the entrant. Any project located outside Australia will only be eligible for an award in the International category.

Your entry into the awards is completed by our online platform, Awards Force. Entrants are able to start their entry as in progress before submitting. To assist in your preparation of your submission, please read the important documents
