Flipping the focus: crafting play spaces for users who don’t fit the mould

About this webinar

Not every young person connects with play in the same way, and yet so many public spaces are still designed around a “typical” user who doesn’t truly reflect the community. Flipping the focus: crafting play spaces for users who don’t fit the mould explores how people-centred design can better support teens, girls and other underrepresented groups through spaces that feel inviting and genuinely fun.

From quiet nooks and cubby-style retreats to active zones, ninja elements, and fitness-led play, we’ll unpack what it takes to create spaces that feel right for a wider range of ages and needs. We’ll explore therelationship between play and exercise, how different events and challenges stimulate a variety of developmental needs, and smart design choices that cater to diverse social and sensory preferences.

Attendees will leave with practical tools and design approaches that lift a play space beyond the standard brief; creating environments that are more inclusive, more engaging, and better for everybody.
