Cass Gaisford, AILA | QLD Executive

Hello AILA Queensland members,

It’s been a tough past couple of weeks for many people, and I hope that you, family and friends are safe. For the AILA community, please reach out to the AILA Qld exec if there is something we are able to assist with.

Such devastating times really highlight the importance of community and networks that are there to lend a hand and provide much needed support. I think about my local community which is closely knit by the local dog-offleash, playground and kickabout fields within our local park, and how valuable green open space is for fostering community friendships and relationships. This is also the focus of this year’s Parks Week and how spending time in our parks and open spaces positively influences our wellbeing. Parks Week (5-13 March) celebrates this vital role parks play in creating liveable cities and thriving communities. Our Annual Parks Forum with PLA which was originally scheduled for this Thursday will now be held on Thursday 29 March.

It is also time to celebrate with International Women’s Day today. The theme this year is to break the bias and how we can break the bias in our communities, workplaces and our Industry. The AILA Gender Equity Working group are hosting a webinar to discuss Practice Note #10: A Guide to Equitable Practice if you miss the live session, the recording will be available to AILA members after the session. Access Practice Note #10: A Guide to Equitable Practice on Memberscape now (member login required).

The AILA awards entry close today (8 March 2022) across the country. I’m sure everyone is very excited to see the range of projects that have been underway over the past year that will be entered into the QLD Awards. If you or colleagues have been affected by the floods and need assistance with submitting your entry and additional time complete it. Please contact AILA QLD on [email protected]

AILA QLD have also re-commenced the practice visits. This is a great opportunity for Landscape Architecture firms or teams to meet face to face with members of the QLD AILA exec to discuss what AILA has been up to, particularly in providing an update on some of the great work that has been going on behind the scenes for its members. It also provides a chance for the AILA QLD exec to find out a little more about the various practices, and how AILA can provide most value, as well as providing opportunities for Landscape Architects to get more involved in the organization. Be sure to contact AILA QLD if you are interested in hosting a practice visit.
