Re-imagining the role of the street for the
cities of the future.
The Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand, in collaboration with AILA Victoria, is
proudly facilitating an unique multi-disciplinary and multi-sector gathering of urban leaders
who will actively discuss the future of our streets – what they are, what they are not, and
what they should be.
Date: TBC
Time: 8:30am - 12:30pm
Venue: Arts Centre Melbourne, 100 St Kilda Road, SOUTHBANK
What the street means, and the role it plays, is as diverse as the user. What the street could
be is the topic of this event.
In the cities of the future, our streets must look different, very different. And for decades they
have consumed prime real estate, cost significant sums of precious budget to maintain, and
continue to be the battle ground for multiple modes of mobility, and uses.
“Many cities have up to 30 percent of their land area consumed by streets. We need to
engage in a meaningful discussion so we are prepared to take advantage of the opportunity
for increasing walking, cycling, transit and green and smart street strategies in the coming
years.” Adam Beck, Executive Director of Smart Cities Council Australia New Zealand.
