News from AILA Victoria Chapter - November 2025
Newly appointed to the Vic Chapter Executive, I am finding my feet in the new role and my horizons are rapidly expanding in regards to advocating for the profession of landscape architecture. It's been inspiring to connect with so many members who are passionate about ensuring our profession has a strong voice at every level of governance - championing what we do, the value we bring, and our vital role in protecting the environment. I want to sincerely thank all members who generously volunteer their time on behalf of AILA and the profession, driving advocacy both within and beyond our community.
On that note, I would like to focus on three recent items that are of relevance to our profession.
1. AILA members have contributed to the recently released DEECA Guide for Open Space Strategies which provides resources for open space practitioners in the preparation of local open space strategies and to guide strategic planning and decision-making about current and future provision and design of open space. Ensure to attend the upcoming online event VIC Member Briefing: DEECA - Guide for Open Space Strategies for an overview of the GOSS with Fran Horsley from DEECA.
2. Last month, AILA met with Minister Kilkenny alongside PIA, AIA and UDF to discuss a joint submission in response to the Victorian Government (DoTP) ‘Mid-Rise Standards Consultation Draft’. While supportive of increasing well-designed, sustainable and more affordable housing, AILA are requesting changes to achieve acceptable outcomes in regards to Deep Soil, Tree Canopy, Permeability & Stormwater, Solar Access and Biodiversity.
3. The recently released National Climate Risk Assessment report provides a very sombre outlook of the realities of a warming climate, and an urgent call to action. As landscape architects, we must;
- Continue to prioritise Care for Country in our work,
- Advocate to clients and government for greater action,
- Harness our creativity and passion for nature to help fast-track meaningful environmental outcomes.
The report clearly outlines the devastating outcomes if we continue with business as usual.
Please feel free to get in touch with any items that you would like me to bring to the attention of the board at our next meeting.
Many thanks,
Lara Westcott, AILA VIC Secretary
